Wooden Whispers

Moonlight Dazzles upon the glade’s barren earth.

The scent of charcoal cascading through the gloomy clearing

Sparks and embers dancing on the tips of grass, flickering with incandescent light.

A lone conifer rests in the center of the carnage, smoky stumps encircling the singular living things.

Can you hear it?

A slight rustle in the ashy foliage of the sapling, a cry to their fallen family.

The butterfly answers the call, pathetic flapping echoing across the burnt ferny floor.

Half- singed wings from the malignant scorching hit the tree’s fledgling roots from a difficult crash.

The humans’ greed has been very difficult on the forest.

Soon, a scarce crowd forms, all sorrowfully bearing wounds.

Mournful howling from a fox with one ear, limping of a three-legged deer.

Serene melancholy, shared by the animals connected through pain.

Silent reminiscence of a time long gone.

Life.

Lush grass spread as far as the eye could see, trees reaching for the sky, unbridled by gravity.

Harmony resonating through the wilds, the sheer definition of nature gushing in earth’s veins.

An ancient way of life, paramount to creating balance.

But all of this was about to change.

Signs were subtle, a plastic bag hanging by a branch, some rubbish on the ground.

Then the humans came

Saws and flamethrowers, weapons of destruction.

They sought out the forest to raze for space to throw the garbage.

A home to thousands, destroyed for their own idiocy.

A dream cut short, by an ember striking the young plant.

The forest’s last hope set ablaze, the crowd wailing in despair.

This is how it ends, under the avarice of people.

We can still stop this, only we can prevent this from happening.
