Moonlight

By Dr. Daisaku Ikeda
Read by Dr. Akash Ouchi

In the shining realm of the silver monarch

the serene light of a wonderland peace

I want to become drunk with moonlight,

not out of tender sentimentality

but as a human being living in fullest harmony with nature,

determined never to lose sight of its primal being,

as a natural man, unhurried,

I want to love the moonlight

From that dot at the zenith of the deep mysterious midnight sky,

beams of the moon that come quietly streaming down -

in them the rigorous, unspeaking

light of the life force,

luster of those who live ever by the inherent Law -

how many stern silent counsels have I learned from it,

how many paths of encouragement?

One man sings of the full moon,

another fashions a sonata,

the Apollo spaceship reflects its face-

I want to observe the posture of the moonlight,

for that epitome of the moving universe in its stillness

I believe is the epitome of human life

Over this round garden golden waves drift lightly,

this stainless mirror gazes with the light of compassion

at the green earth as it moves and sorrows-

I love the moonlight

Not even the clouds can assault it,

not even the wind,

no shadow across the face of that flashing gold fire

Tonight again, I alone talk with the moonlight

Pondering my life with its accumulation of cares,

I watch the moonlight
