Lamentation of us

By Leticia Mongre

I have seen the faces of us in the eyes of children

I have seen fate fall apart in the eyes of children

I have walked many streets, in circles

And within glances of ice I have seen the children

I have seen many lives taken

by the hands of the ones who aren’t many

I have seen the face of a child in each hand that went by

As nothing

For the rest of us is today,

For them is an everyday of eternal redemption

Forgive us for looking the other way in the eyes of children

When we had too much in our tables, our children

They did not have one need unserved
And so we had looked away in the eyes of children

It cannot be fair to be fed while the rest of the Earth is scarce

The Earth is not all for one, but one and for all

And still, it’s sad and it’s children

And still we can’t see in the eyes

In the still, hoping eyes of always believing children

Why did we run away from the sorrow?

We had no gain

Why did we sell our silence?

We had no gain

Why is it coming back now to haunt us?

We had no gain

Forgive us for we looked the other way, for running in circles like fools

We meant to be good in the eyes of children

We meant to do good

No good

We have to reveal

A clear crystal view

The only privileged in this world will be the children
